A Glimpse Of Costa Rican Culture And Traditions

Since the majority of Costa Ricans are not indigenous to the region, Costa Rica has less cultural flair than other Latin American Countries such as Mexico or Guatemala. Only one percent of the Costa Rican population is considered to be Indian, and there is a small Latin population who identify as Ticos, but a whopping 98 percent of the population is white.

While this has an affect on the Latin feel of Costa Rica, Costa Rica still resembles most other Latin counties as it is conservative, traditional, and predominately Catholic. Gender roles are extremely traditional with men and women respecting their roles within the family. Most Costa Ricans also live at home until they are married and going away to college or to find independence from ones family is rare.

The backbone of Costa Rican culture is the family. Family ties are of the utmost importance and some of the most important Costa Rican traditions revolve around the family: baptisms, engagement parties, weddings, first communions and funerals.

Religion also plays an important role in Costa Rican culture but takes a back burner to family. Many religious celebrations are more about spending time with family and partying than they are about the religious significance of the holiday. Religious parades and processions occur here just as they do in other Latin American countries but lack the colorful flair that is seen elsewhere. This is because the Indian and Latin populations are so small that they dont offer a mix of cultural religious practices.

Costa Rica experiences two major economic shutdowns that revolve around the Easter and Christmas holidays. During this time, Businesses can be closed for up to five days, transportation services cease, and families use this time to spend time together and worship.

Another integral part of Costa Rican tradition is the pilgrimage to Basilica de los Angeles. This pilgrimage takes place each year and is in honor of the Virgin of the Angels.

Even though religion has taken on less significance than it has in the past and families often vacation rather than observe religious customs, families continue to come together often. Large gatherings that include extended family are common and are perhaps the molding ground of Costa Rican culture.

Meditations Meditating for Good Will

One of the things we are taught when we are young is to respect each other and to treat each other with the up most respect. However some where along the way we seem to forget the art of good will. There is a simple meditation that you can use to help you ensure that your heart, mind and soul each day maintain good will towards all mankind.

The first step in this meditation is to sit comfortably into your meditation position. The recommended position for this meditation is to sit on the floor with no back support or alternatively sit on a chair with no back support. Ensure when you are in the position that your back and shoulders are straight, your head is upright, eyes closed with your palms pointing up and open.

Begin the meditation session by using a basic breathing technique. Clear you mind and use the simple breathing technique to ensure that you have focus to start the next stage of the meditation session.

First in your minds eye imagine your immediate family such as your husband or wife and your children if you have them. In your mind, begin with the mantra, “May my family live in total peace and in true happiness”. Continue saying this mantra whilst you see your family in your mind. Feel the love this mantra produces for your family. Feel the happiness and peace as your family lives its life in total peace and in true happiness.

The next stage of this meditation is to now extend that mantra to those people in a wider circle such as your friends, business associates, your customers and anyone who you may have met today. Now extend your mantra and say the follow, “May the people who come in contact with me who I call my friends know the love and peace I have to share.” Feel the love and peace to be extended to these people.

For this to truly work, you must now in your meditation session see one person who may have wronged you during the day. It may have been someone who cut in front of you whilst you were driving, an angry customer or somebody who was abrupt or rude to you. You must now use the mantra, “May the person who felt it necessary to be rude, know true peace and happiness and may they learn to treat others in kind”.

If at any time during your meditation session your thoughts track to inappropriate feelings such as anger or angst towards someone, simply start the meditation session from scratch and practice the mantras till you can get to the point where you can extend the goodwill to the person that took your focus away.

It has been proven time and time again, a person who harbor grudges and hate towards others live shorter lives because the hate builds into stress that causes stress to your body and weakens it. One of the great mantras or sayings I live my life by, comes from the greatest man to have walked on this earth and he spoke these words, “Love one another as I have loved you.” We have Meditation Music available to help you with your meditation. Finding A Family Friendly Suburb In Auckland To Invest In

Raising a family in the nation’s largest city can be quite the challenge – the expensive housing market and little amount of space that many inner-city Auckland properties offer isn’t exactly what you want in a family home. However, with the opportunities for business and employment that you find in Auckland, many are hesitant to leave. Choosing a family friendly suburb, remaining in the area and making the best property investment that you can takes a fair amount of research and patience. If you’re in the market for a home and you’re trying to figure out what will be best for you and your family, look to some of these Auckland suburbs.

Grey Lynn

In zone for Auckland Girls Grammar, Western Springs College and Mount Albert Grammar secondary schools, Grey Lynn is a popular choice for families raising teenagers who don’t want to be too far from the central city. The CBD is within walking distance and the suburb has plenty of service from public transport. Many of the homes in the area have been through recent renovations, but the median sale price of nearly $800,000 does put off a lot of buyers.

Saint Johns

A popular family suburb near Glen Innes, Saint Johns has seen plenty of housing development and renovation throughout the past 30 years because of its popularity. Selwyn College, the state secondary school servicing the area, offers quality high school education and the suburb is only a 20-minute drive from the CBD. In recent years, median prices of the Auckland real estate for sale in Saint Johns have been hovering around the $650,000 mark.

Papakura

South of Auckland city, but still only a half hour from the CBD, Papakura offers a lifestyle that appeals to many families. The lower median property price of $300,000 and extra space that it offers in the form of lifestyle blocks and family sized sections makes Papakura an incredibly popular choice for those that don’t mind the short commute. Papakura High and Rosehill College are both excellent secondary schools in the suburb and there are a number of primary and intermediate level schools to suit families of any age.

Birkenhead

To the north of the Auckland CBD, Birkenhead is a popular middle class suburb with easy access to the central city via the northern motorway. The suburb’s two primary schools, Birkenhead School and Verran Primary are both very popular and highly rated. The average house price of $500,000 is quite affordable compared to other suburbs so close to Auckland Central.

Choosing where to invest in Auckland isn’t going to be an overnight decision. Take the time to consider your options and what you can afford. Research the growth that the suburbs you’re interested in have enjoyed in the past decade and try to make a property investment decision that sees a good return down the road. While the cost of living in the city is quite high compared to the rest of the country, the benefits in terms of opportunity and higher wages are extremely attractive.

Blended Family With Two Sets Of Children, No Problem

If you are finding the job of being a step mom or step dad difficult, you are not alone. Movies and television shows would have us believing that success is inevitable when two adults with children meet, fall in love, and decide to blend their two families. And it all happens within a one- or two-hour time frame! In blended family life, real life, making it happen does not always come so quickly or easily.

The joys of blended family living
A blended family with two sets of step kids has great potential for being that great big happy family you and your spouse envision, and the rewards of being a step mom and a step dad are boundless. Finding an entirely new set of people to love and to love you is always worthwhile; and the simple act of expanding compassion, affection, and interest in others can have far reaching effects. It is not, however, all sunshine and roses. Being a step mom or a step dad can be gratifying, but try not to expect too much.

Step sibling challenges
Try not to expect that your particular set of step kids, no matter what their ages, will automatically get along. Most step siblings do have one important thing in common: none of them asked to be there. Blended family step siblings, whether they like it or not, have to share a home and learn to get along, despite seeing each other only on weekends or holidays when one set of kids lives with another parent.

One set of step kids may be older and live away from home, joining the step family only occasionally. It really helps to be patient and understanding, and to have reasonable expectations of how quickly step siblings want to, and then manage to, become a unit.

Territorial issues
In a step family, territory is often an issue. Kids who have had their own rooms in a previous house may find sharing accommodations, even for short visits by step siblings, difficult to manage. In some blended family homes accommodations can be very crowded, but do try to make sure everyone has at least some private or personal own area in their shared room. Having their own place to put toys, books and clothes where no one will bother them can go a long way toward making visiting step kids feel more welcome and resident kids feel less intruded upon.

Respect
You must expect, and receive respect from each member of your step family, and each member in turn must be able to expect, and receive respect from you and everyone else. When you set your ground rules for living as a blended family, make treating each other in a respectful and caring manner an absolute and non-negotiable decree.

As step parents in a step family, even-handed and fair treatment is vitally important, because step siblings notice if someone gets preferential treatment or is not challenged when they refuse to follow household rules. Speaking or acting out in disrespectful ways among step siblings or between step kids and step parents, in either direction, must never be tolerated.

Love
Step parents often feel they ought to love their step kids in the same way they love their own. The time may come when everyone in the blended family knows they are wholly loved and accepted, and it is lovely when it does, but to expect indistinguishable love right away is an unreasonable expectation.

Initially, all you can do is to be fair in your dealings with both bio and step kids, and to take a genuine interest in your step kids. It is usually easier, and a lot more genuine, to love someone for whom they really are and not just because you think you should. Remember, you choose your new spouse, and if those step kids seem very un-loveable at times, then love them through your spouse.
